Even though the media and government officials in Iran had opened a special account on the purchase of Sukhoi-35 fighters from Russia, the Minister of Defense of the Islamic Republic has said that it seems that Tehran has given up on receiving them or is probably disappointed, so that Ali Khamenei, as the commander-in-chief, will not be able to receive the fighters from Russia.
New Universe:
Mohammadreza Ashtiani, the Minister of Defense of the Islamic Republic of Iran, implicitly rejected the receipt of the Sukhoi-35 fighter from Russia and said, “At some point, we will make an appointment for purchase, but we will come to the conclusion that the capability of domestic production has been created for us.”
– Some unofficial sources say that Russia is facing a shortage of weapons at the height of the war with Ukraine, and it is very unlikely that it will be able to supply weapons to Iran or any other country in such a situation. Some rumors indicate that the Sukhoi manufacturing company could not even implement its contract with the Russian army.
-Receiving strategic weapons in geopolitically sensitive areas like the Middle East requires, in addition to money, serious and influential leaders who have credibility in the international system, and Ali Khamenei lacks all of these.
On July 20, Mohammadreza Ashtiani said in an interview with Daneshjo news agency about the latest delivery status of Sukhoi-35 from Russia: “When we have some capabilities, we may not feel the need to buy equipment in many fields, or even other countries will turn to Iran for purchases.”
Claiming that “we have very good conditions” and “we are among the top countries in the world” in all fields, he said: “If we ever feel the need, we can organize or pursue this work.”
This military official explained: “Once we make an appointment for purchase, but we come to the conclusion that the ability to produce internally has been created for us, but we are reviewing the conditions.”
John Kirby, the spokesman of the US National Security Council, said in December 2022 that Iranian pilots have been trained in Moscow this spring on how to fly Sukhoi fighters.
Two months later, in February 2022, after the unveiling of the underground base of the Air Force of the Islamic Republic of Iran called “Eagle 44”, Western sources published satellite images of this base, in which two replicas of the Sukhoi-35 were visible next to one of the hangars.
Analysts claimed that these mockups show that Tehran is “positioning” and preparing to receive these fighters. A few weeks after that, the delegation of the Islamic Republic at the United Nations in March 2022 announced the “finalization” of the contract to buy Russian Sukhoi-35 fighter jets, but refused to give more details about it and called it confidential.
At the same time, the Israeli media, citing Western intelligence officials, reported that the Russians are planning to deliver 24 such fighters to Iran. It was stated that these planes were initially supposed to be sold to Egypt, but America prevented this sale.
Air Force Commander: I don’t know the details
Hamid Vahedi, the commander of the Air Force of Khordad 1402, said in the “Saf Aol” program about the receipt of the Sukhoi-35 from Russia that he himself is not aware of the details of this possible deal.
He stated, “As the Air Force, we are a user. Of course, we need to upgrade the Air Force. The plane that is proposed now is the fourth generation plane and we are ready for the decision of the high-ranking officials. This issue is on our agenda, but I don’t know the details. “We still don’t know when this fighter will enter our squadron, and we are ready to use it whenever these fighters are purchased.”
With so many government media, especially news agencies close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, they maneuvered a lot on this possible deal. The Fars news agency wrote about “the West’s concern about the arrival of the Sukhoi-35 in Iran” and the website “Mashreq” reported that “the Zionists are angry about the arrival of the Sukhoi-35 in Iran!”
Government analysts stated that with the entry of these fighters into Iran’s armed forces, the Islamic Republic will gain an “air upper hand” against Israel. It was even announced that the Russians will take the money for the Sukhoi from the money to buy Iranian oil.
Now, the failure to deliver Sukhoi-35 to Iran has faced many reactions. Some users wrote on Twitter that the Islamic Republic paid Russia ransom in various dimensions, but it is constantly being stabbed by Russia.
Researcher and journalist Hirsh Saidian writes in a tweet, “They said that if we accept the economic consequences of drone participation in the Ukraine war, Moscow will give Iran Sukhoi 35 and S400 instead. Not only did they not give weapons, they also denied sovereignty over the three islands.” In international politics, everyone gets points based on their weight and position, not based on heart and port, wit and good service.
The senior officials of the Islamic Republic have always been under the illusion that Russia is helping them in building airplanes and helicopters. A week before the disappointment of receiving Sukhoi planes, Kazem Jalali, the ambassador of the Islamic Republic in Moscow, emphasized that Iran is cooperating with Russia regarding “Sukhoi Superjet 100” passenger planes!
It seems that for the time being, the army forces should continue the campaign of “revolutionary life” to the decommissioned Sukhoi 24 aircraft from the Soviet era, because the Russians do not intend to deliver the new generation Sukhoi to the Islamic Republic. Especially since the Europeans have announced that they will not cancel the arms embargo of the Islamic Republic in the fall of 2023.
Some unofficial sources say that Russia is facing a shortage of weapons at the height of the war with Ukraine, and it is very unlikely that it will be able to supply weapons to Iran or any other country in such a situation. Some rumors suggest that the Sukhoi manufacturer could not even fulfill its contract with the Russian army. Beyond these issues, receiving strategic weapons in geopolitically sensitive areas such as the Middle East, in addition to money, requires serious and influential leaders who have credibility in the international system, and Ali Khamenei lacks all of these.
